Marketing In A Crisis: 5 Steps to get back on track
Are You Sharing The Right Message?
When it comes to marketing and making the most from your budget, it’s important to have a game plan. It might sound obvious but at times like these, it matters more than ever. Your current plan might have gone out the window.
It’s time to regroup and reassess your marketing plan.
We understand that when your business (and the world) is in survival mode, it can be hard to focus time and precious resources on marketing. And we don’t want to add to your pain points!
Here are 5 simple ways to refocus you and your team to make sure you’re still showing up in the best light during these uncertain times.
1. Tell us what we need to know
Don't get wrapped up in sharing news or government updates, but let your community know how this is changing your business or service. Share your new opening hours, new routines, increased measures and contact information (and make sure this is easy to find and updated as and when required).
2. Spread positivity as much as possible
Unless you are working in a health/wellness related field, consumers don't need health and safety tips from your business. It can actually have the opposite effect. Instead, focus on what you (and others) are doing to bring value, joy and positive impact on the community. Don’t be shy on sharing third party acts of kindness too - it’s a great way to support other businesses and bring some joy to others via your platforms.
3. Try to instill a sense of normalcy
It's a fine line to walk, you don't want to fear monger but also don't want to seem like you're ignoring the problem. Showcasing your services and the positive ways business is continuing will instill a sense of normalcy and make your customers feel safe. Life does go on and our “new normal” might be here for some time, so it’s important to create a new plan that accurately reflects our new lives - aka the tales of “WFH” (Working From Home”).
4. Make a post-crisis 6-month plan
A marketing plan is imperative to keep your company in the minds of customers and to attract them back once you're open for business. The tone and timing for these campaigns are paramount and without a plan, it will feel like a hurricane for much longer than it needs to. Open up your calendars, reevaluate your goals, your new expectations for the rest of 2020 and start rescheduling these - your newsletters, social media posts, articles and updates can all still happen, but the tone and outcomes might have shifted to accommodate the current climate.
5. Keep calm and carry on
Most importantly, stay safe and keep calm. Don't panic or discontinue your marketing or communications entirely, for fear of getting it wrong. Remember: wherever there is a challenge there is also an opportunity! By staying present and useful in your customers' newly changed lives you'll receive good credit for when things level out and return to normal.
